![]() ![]() ![]() Now Trine is not necessarily an easy game - with later sections requiring some proficient platforming and physics manipulation – but what makes it a great choice for Sunday afternoon gaming are the frequent checkpoints and minimal penalty for the death of the party (all three characters have to die). As a solo player, you’ll be juggling between all three, whereas 3-player local coop will lock each player to a character (and ramp up the chaos to 11). After a brief tutorial, you’ll be able to switch between the sword and shield-wielding Knight, nimble Thief, and object-summoning Wizard each best suited for specific encounters but also capable of navigating any level by themselves if the player is skilful enough. Trine is a classic-styled 2.5D puzzle-platformer with a loose approach to character movement and the pairing of a flexible physics engine with great level design to provide several solutions to any obstacle. Ungainly when it comes to platforming but able to deflect almost any blow or fireball with his shield. If you listen to everything, the lore is surprisingly detailed, but you can safely skip past it if you’re just there for the gameplay. The characters themselves have only a few short lines of dialogue in each chapter – and aren’t even given names until the sequel – but the introductory screen to each chapter is well narrated, slowly unravelling the history of the kingdom and the power of the titular Trine artefact. Trine almost falls into this category, however, the addictive physics- and puzzle-based gameplay, coupled with an incredible fairy-tale soundtrack, perfectly compliment the stunning visuals produced by Forzenbyte’s in-house engine. ![]() Whenever we encounter a brand new game engine, the first games released often the feel like glorified tech demos, with the technology taking front and centre, while gameplay or narrative elements feel underdeveloped and pushed to the back. This doesn’t necessarily mean “casual” games (it’ll all be a tad subjective), rather those with a combination of gameplay mechanics, progression systems, or aesthetics that make it playable with half your brain switched off, while still providing a satisfying experience. It includes 15 challenging and carefully designed levels, each with a distinctly unique atmosphere and visual style, and also brings the long desired online gameplay with up to three players.“Sunday Afternoon Gaming” is a feature in which we look at games you can play to relax. Trine Enchanted Edition is a new version of the original Trine, remade using the Trine 2 engine. The gameplay is based on fully interactive physics – each character’s different abilities and tactics can be used to invent new ways to battle an army of undead and overcome obstacles, and restore the balance of the world. Trine Enchanted Edition is a beautiful fantasy action platformer with a fairytale-like atmosphere, following the journey of three heroes – a Wizard, a Knight and a Thief – in a quest to save the kingdom from evil. ![]()
